The protests against the rising electricity prices, that started a couple of days ago in the capital of Armenia, resulted in the unjustified use of force against the protesters by the regime: in the morning of June 23, 2015the police used water cannons and armored vehicles to disperse the protesters after which hundreds of active citizens and journalists were forcefully detained.

Numerous cases were recorded when the police and some “police” officers in civilian clothes used violence and actions degrading human dignity against the protesters while arresting them.At the moment there are 273 people arrested. As a result of the police actions 25 citizens applied for medical help, while 5 of them are still in intensive care units.

Peace Dialogue NGO condemns the use of force as a response to the peaceful demonstrations; unfortunately this is not the first time.

This proves once again that state security forces instead of serving the citizens have become an instrument of state oppression against all attempts to exercise the right of free speech by lawful Armenian citizens.
