On April 8, 2013, citizens of Vanadzor had an opportunity to harvest the fruits from the tree of their indifference. That day a group of activists from Peace Dialogue NGO organized an event called “The Tree of Our Indifference,” which took place at Artsakh Park of Vanadzor. The aim of the event was to raise awareness, give citizens an opportunity to learn about the numerous problems in our country, and think again about the situation we are in.
Activists put apple-shaped fruits on the tree. They had written on each fruit a number of issues regarding the suicide and murder cases in the Armenian army, violations of law, the growing number of ecological and health issues, emigration, social injustice, inflation, corruption, poverty, and the external debt of the RA.
The mayor of Vanadzor also did not stay away from the event. The Mayor, who was just passing by, was invited by the organizers to join the initiative and to learn about the message of the fruit.
The Mayor Darbinyan took particular note of the cases of human rights violations in the Armenian army. He mentioned that one of the causes of the problem is that today’s young generation has weak communication skills and is insecure in expressing their needs and requests. Concerning the issue of the recruitment of young people with health problems to the army, S. Darbinyan stated that none of young conscripts with health issues could have been recruited to the army, despite the fact that in 2012, 6 deaths were caused by health problems and the provision of improper medical services.
After the initiative, the Tree of Indifference was taken to Peace Dialogue NGO’s office. It is expected that there too the citizens will have an opportunity to harvest the fruits of their indifference.
